Are they both plugins or also capable of stand-alone operation?

AFAIK Triangle is capable of stand-alone operation or you can use a VST host like http://www.tobybear.de/p_minihost.html

Some of my recent favorites:

Wavesim (PPG 2.2. emulation)

SQ8L (Ensoniq SQ80 emulation)

Antti's Asynth (simple but great sounding VA with good filters)

Antti's taurus and phase 90 are both really good too.

My favourite is "crazy diamonds" string ensemble simulator:

the "azr3" hammond simulator is pretty good too (I used it on our track on awakenings vol 2)
