A name you don´t come across too often. I had the pleasure of attending a couple of his lectures back in the 1990s.

Yeah! you're right Stephen, You were lucky to attend these lectures! One of my goals with Audionautas is to pay tribute to those great pioneers of the past like Sala, Trautwein, Mager, Termen, Bode, etc. Certainly, a fascinating time.
Best regards

I always was totally impressed by Sala.
I still could beat myself that I didn't attend one of the last concerts he gave, at an electronic festival in Karlsruhe not too long before his death
So, thank You for the links, Pablo.
I guess I will have to do a little translation work again.
If You keep those great articles coming, in no time I will be speaking Spanish fluently...

Thanks BruecknerAmbient!!!. It would be great for you to speak spanish About a month ago, Michael Hoenig wrote to congratulate me for the article on Departure From The Northern Wasteland and said I should make versions in English, French and German. I appreciated his kind words, but it's an enormous task.
This second part was especially difficult to write because there were a lot of events going on in Sala's life (new instruments, concert tours, WWII, and so on). I hope the next chapter dedicated to Sala's involvement in soundtracks during the 60s, 70s and 80s will be easier.
Best regards
Pablo/Audionaut
PS. The Karlsruhe festival was not exactly a concert. Sala was invited to play his music on tape during the solar eclipse on august 11 1999. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jj0C7icxYvA

You're welcome, Pablo!
Nice Michael Hoenig reacted to that, and maybe (vaguely maybe...) because I posted a link to Your article on my FB wall and "mentioned" (linked it to...) his FB presence. He wrote me a thank You as well. Then again, maybe he was already aware of it anyway (just so nice to imagine to be somehow involved )
Actually, I've just opened another thread because I stumbled upon the announcement of a Michael Hoenig interview tonight on a Berlin radio station:
http://www.radioeins.de/programm/programmbeitraege/music_specials/studiogast__michael.html
Ah, not quite a Sala concert, I see - back then, I just saw some announcement and thought he played live. It was some techno event, I think...
However, it would have been cool to see him in person anyway.
Thank You for the video link!
P.S. Thinking about it, perhaps I could offer to do at least a German and English version of the Hoenig article, since I have the (very rough) translation still on my Mac anyway. Then again, there were quite a few details I didn't really get or had to guess or conclude even with google help, so if I do it, I would do an English version first, and You then should at least proof read it...

Oskar Sala invited me to the concert he performed when the Zeil-Passage (shopping mall) was opened in Frankfurt in 1993. I couldn´t make it to the show. I still have his letter somewhere.
Some years later I missed his show with Thomas Köner and Burnt Friedman in Berlin. I think this was his final live performance with the Trautonium (which suffered from severe damage during the show and was rendered nearly unplayable). After that, Sala did only lectures (attended one of his last ones in Herne in 1997).
Do you know the Sala documentary "Die vergangene Zukunft des Klanges" ("the past future of sound") by German filmmakers Oliver Rauch and Ingo Rudloff? It was premiered in 2002, just a couple of days before Sala passed away.
Try www.upstart.de, maybe they can still help you out with a copy (if you haven´t got one yet, that is).

Great - never heard of that one, thank You for the tip, Stephen!
Also never heard about the Friedman collaboration, do any recordings exist?
I'm quite fond of 'Nine Horses' thing with Sylvian etc. (...about time to give that one a respin...wasn't it with Jaki Liebezeit, too?).
