One of the bands/artists that's still completely absent from my collection is Popol Vuh. Somehow I just never listened to anything by them. It's never too late to change this, so my question is where to start? What is considered 'essential' Popol Vuh? And which ones to avoid?

I would agree, if you'are after EM, then Affenstunde and In der Garten Pharaos are THE albums (they feature Moog synth extensively). Later they turned into an acoustic outfit which may not be for everyone. However, they did release a few archived electronic recordings from the early 1970's on "Nosferatu", if you can't get enough of that thing.

Popol Vuh is an acquired taste, definitely something to try before you buy, there should be enough smaples on youtube from all eras.
To my knowledge, the first and most consistent spiritual type of music in the music industry.
The above "warnings" are very true, to Affenstunde and In den Gärten Pharaos I would add Aguirre and Nosferatu- both the soundtrack and Bruder des schattens...version.
A couple more albums came as a total surprise-City Raga 1994, a chill out lounge/down tempo and Sheperd's symphony from 1997 again loungey and with some subdued rhythms and chants echoing of Deep Forest.
These were so un-Popol Vuh.

There's around 5 records I like by them (him). I'll have to look at their discography to remind me which ones. I'll add them in later when I have time.

I had a listen to some Youtube samples of In Den Gärten Pharaos and this sounded like an acquired taste indeed. Could be interesting if you take the time to really sit down to listen to it. But I don't think it's really my cup o' tea. I may buy the album though, if only out of curiousity (and since it's part of the EM history).
Thanks for all your suggestions so far!

Recommending Popol Vuh is like recommending Faust, even a lot of listening will only yield random interest or none at all.
A style of music no one copied somehow and what puzzled me is that every album was reissued many times.
All these years I have not bumped into one single devout fan, for EM collectors it appeared more of a than something to follow.

I agree. I wasn't exposed to Faust's music nor Can for that matter until about 12 yrs ago. It was hard getting into the cds I bought. Any aquired taste? I definitely need more listens for it to grow on me.
I think some issues are caused by new labels wanting to re-release music that is "underground" or "obscure" for the cool factor?
What amazes me is when albums are reissued when you can find their cds new and used at amazon and other online retailers. But they're free to do what they want.

Popol Vuh is well known for the album "Nosferatu",
to my personal tastes, this one is the best Popol Vuh,
the other albums are more for the collection,
not necessarily to listen more than once...
basically because they are (were) not an electronic band.
(I mean, their kind of music is not for everyone, as Artemi said).
But, after all, they were known worldwide.

I just bought the reissue of "For You and Me" and it's all kinds of awful. I can't even tell you - it's just horrible.

No one vouched for this one, a couple of nice piano based tracks, the rest New Age Hippie Chants.
Try you tube for samples, there are many albums and most are difficult to digest.
