WOW!
The concert of LOOM was really fantastic, not only the older Tangerine Dream and Johannes Schmoelling pieces were fantastic but also the other songs. And Johannes Schmoelling playing on the grand piano at the beginning of the two parts of the concert was fabulous! I hope very soon a double CD will be released of this concert.
But let's not forget. The concert of Eric v.d. Heijden with Harald v.d. Heijden and F.D. was also very good. Nice to see how much fun they have on stage.
René van der Wouden give also a good performance at the upper floor.
Personally I didn't really like the music and performance of Matsumi. The songs were rushed after each other and had no real story to it.
Also the timing was very good. There was sufficient time between the second and last concert in the main hall so you were able to go to a restaurant and have a dinner.
@Ron: Really very well organised and also big thanks to everybody else who made this an outstanding festival.

So here we are, the day after the night before. And what a great night it was!
E-Live 2011 opened with Matzumi, which what I guess must be Japanese for "extrenely bad music". I've seen a fair number of electronic music concerts over the years, some good some not so good. But this was just utterly bad. From the anoucement it appeared that Matzumi won a price for best newcomer somewhere. Boy am I worried about the future of the genre! I've seldom seen this rare combination of both a complete lack of talent and skills on a stage. First of all, the good Lord gave you 2 (two!) hands to play your instrument. What's wrong with playing both the chords and the solo at the same time? Every kid in music school will tell you that it is possible. The only thing needed is some practice. And practice won't hurt anyway. I stayed for the whole concert. Mainly because I didn't want to disturb the people next to me, but this must have been the longest one hour of my life. Okay, I think that's enough for this horrible 'performance'. Let's just quickly forget about it.
Next was the duo Eric and Harold van der Heijden. On the bill as just Eric, but I think Harold deserves equal credits. A solid performance, as expected. Eric knows how to crank out a catchy tune, and Harold is your man to put a nice beat underneath it. A nice (and quite rare) combination in EM. Eric is also the only guy who has found an answer to John Dyson's inevitable concert anthem "Time Node". Da Capo really should be the smashing encore of the show, and not be stuffed somewhere in the middle. A great tune, especially live.
Was everything perfect? Of course not. Some parts were just a little too long to keep the attention. And where John Dyson has a more traditional verse-chorus-verse approach, it's mostly chorus in Eric's compositions. They would really benefit from some more variation. But overall, this was a solid performance with an honorary mention for the (inevitable!) Frank Dorritke on guitar to add some extra spice to the mix.
Unfortunately I haven't seen enough of any of René van der Wouden's performances for a well-funded opinion. But from what I've seen and heard I think he should have been on the main stage instead of Miss M. A missed opportunity, really.
After a nice long dinner break it was time for the main act: Loom. Something I was really looking forward too. I've been an admirer of Johannes Schmoelling ever since he joined TD and brought melody and harmony into their music. He has composed some of the most memorable and beautiful songs in EM (a.o. Matjora is still alive - which he played live this time!). And from the very beginning it became clear that we were witnessing something special. Three great musicians on stage, playing solid tunes. Not a bad song, not a single bad moment! How's that!? As has been said before, this wasn't 'just' a concert, this was an event. A rare occasion, which can be compared to the legendary performance of Ashra on the KLEMdag festival in 1997. Or, I'm guessing, the Logos show in London. Loom played songs from Jerome Froese's and Johannes Schmoelling's solo catalogue, as well as classic TD pieces, such as Tangram on grand piano, and a most memorable version of Beach Theme from Thief, with a stellar performance by Jerome. After two encores the show was over, and all that was left was the memory of something very special. The whole performance has been recorded and seems to be scheduled for release sometime. I can only hope this will be very soon.
Even though it had a bit of a false start, this was an excellent day. Thanks to Ron Boots and crew for making this happen. Marvelous!

Just one small critical note:
I didn't really understand why a lot of people hurried to get out between the two encores that LOOM gave away....
Very impolite towards the performing artist and the organisation!
Whatever the reason of this behaviour may be, it can't be blaimed to the organisation of this event... they warned us before that all times were approx. times.
