I'd always assumed the intro was ARP 2600 fed by an ARP Sequencer or possibly an AKS, but then I read this comment:

Folks, I have a '67 Lowry Heritage with the same percussion repeat feature, and let me assure you... this is the sound's origin. There are plenty of pics out there of Pete with this organ. It's not hard to reproduce the sound on this thing, but the reason they used a recording/sequence live is prob because the organ is just too heavy."

That intro never sounded "synthy" enough to my ears. I do remember reading years ago that it was an organ, even though there were those who claimed it to be a synth. Thanks for bringing that to light, Grant!

At the risk of freaking a lot of you out, I have a recording of this song being performed by an accordion band, marimba/sequencer riff 'n all. It's one of those things I listen to when i am in a super silly mode (or I just want to piss my kids off). Here's a video of the band performing the song, IF YOU DARE!!!

I -LOVE- that stuff... favorites include "Cocktail" which is a Canadian lounge band Performing Canadian rock songs lounge style (Personal favorite their version of Rush-Closer to the heart Frank Sinatra style... brings tears to my eyes every time.... Then there's that one album of Stairway to Heaven covers done as if by different bands... Beatles version is a favorite... last but certainly not least the "shreds" series on Youtube where they remove the sound then put in a whole different performance... sometimes writing totally bizarre lyrics based on lip-reading the absolute best is this satire of KISS:

You might be thinking of the intro/backing to "Won't Get Fooled Again", which was in fact an organ stuffed through a VCS3.
