When Eppie (Hulshof) mentioned that the hardware will eventually come to an end in the near future, he opened up a can of a whole bunch of thoughts that

good story.
But for me there is no difference between hard or soft-synths
between analogue, digital or virtual.
people who used analogs often used taperecorders, what is the different between a taperecoder and a sampler?? it is just a way to store sounds.
about presets, well using papersheets with the settings of the knobs is the same as storing an preset in a digital synth or VST.
only the tuning of an analog synth is different, but is that good or not??
I do not know, I think that's personal.
What I hate is the use of presets made by others, but that's also personal.
also using of samples not made by the artist himself is not good in my eyes.
Do we get better music?? I think that it does not make any difference.
It is only the artist who makes the music.
Ok, some artists do it simple by using musical bits of others, and mixed it into simple tracks, but is the quality better or not?? that is up to the listener.
But the most important thing is to create a musical piece, that the artist likes
As answer on the question "if there were no analogue synth" I would say, what was the starting point of Berlin School? Did TD used synths on their first album?? Probably only the use of sequencers made BS great.
But that are my thoughts.

A lot of Berlin School music was made with what were pretty much preset instruments, just used creatively.
There are still people who want to make their own sounds, regardless of whether it is with hardware or software or any old bits and bobs.
At the moment software is capable of making sounds almost as good as hardware, the only trouble is that the interface with a laptop isn't ideal for performing music.
When software sounds as good, or better, and has better ways to interface with it I don't think anyone will mourn the loss of 'hardware' as computers will be the new hardware

This is a somewhat silly debate (he-he, just teasing, guys...). It

Software is great when it comes to "producing" music, i. e. the final product that is the result of hours of labour. Software-based mastering can do some amazing tricks you could only do with outboard equipment at the price of a decent semi-detached house. This is great stuff I would not wish to live without. But if it comes to making music, you need proper instruments that are *musical*. If you are a real musician and not only a twiddling with a computer mouse, that is.
One of the reasons why I find 99% of all EM that boring.
Well try this track,
Live Rehearsals At Spacemission-01-Grunn Live Project.

totally done LIVE with the PC as hardware, together with an AN1x; no software used for production and mastering, except of the fades and normalizing. No software used for playing the notes, only to run the VSTi's
No mouse used, the vsti's are played with the AN1x-keyboard.
Can someone tell which part is by software and what by hardware??
All sounds are self-made presets, no samplers involved.
No musical lessons, I try to forget them
created in 30 min
no overdub etc
definitely boring, and I like it

hardware is almost done and over and so is our electronic music.
we are the last of the fools who listen/make this shit.
and indeed a lot is boring even mine I know, but I like to do it so much.
silence is golden!

I have more fun with my Yamaha CS50 for a few minutes than with the Arturia CS80V on the most exciting Apple Macbook for a whole year. But I like the Arturia package boxes. Especially the one with all the instruments in it.
I don't think EM is over, but has a serious influenza concerning composition and quality.

For me quality is something I can listen to for more than 2 times
i.e. quality = what I like
everyone has different ideas about what makes something 'good', mostly based on previous experience. So it is to be expected that people with different experiences will think differently.
Hardware and software are just tools, things people use to realise the music they want to make, different people like different tools to make different music, there's no right or wrong, just opinions

Without a multi finger touch screen, all laptop music will not be as live as a real hardware concert. Right now you need some hardware to change to parameters at the same time. Or do you see two mouse pointers if you connect to mouses to the computer?
But on the other hand, who is actually still playing real live. I am so borred by those many faking EM concerts with a DVD playback to see the computer animations synced to the beat.
This is not live at all to me.

I agree on this one. Look at a 70-ties performance of Rick Wakeman (see YouTube).
Anymore more precise thoughts about quality EM or not-EM?

You can connect midi-keyboards with knobs and sliders to alter the VSTi settings live.

Showing animations has nothing to do with live playing, only when the music is not played live
about playback with DVD or CD, and than play live over it?
Ever seen Schulze and TD Live? they used tapemachines for the background sounds, why not CD ??
BTW Is Rick Wakeman EM??
But this looks indeed better than a laptop

I thinks it is what you want to see, not what you want to hear when you are going to a live concert
But that has nothing to do with the topic
