BTW Achim Breiling has written a very nice & kind review of the album for the german prog-rock page "Babyblaue Seiten" ranking it 13 points out of 15.
The original text in german language can be found here:

And for those of you not familiar with the language I´ve done a quick-and-dirty run through a translator for you:

---

Frank Makowski - Canon der Finsternisse

Frank Makowski from Unna, born in 1968, has been active as an electronic musician for over 30 years, more precisely since the end of the 80s of the last century. Inspired by the Berlin School, his works have mostly appeared under project names such as „The Speed Of Dark“ and „Tranquillity“, most recently the album "The Dark Water Edition" in 2007. In the mid-1990s, Makowski was also one of the founders of „['ramp]“; however, he left the formation at the beginning of the new millennium. After a long pause, Makowski now presents a new solo work with "Canon der Finsternisse“ („Canon of The Eclipses"), apparently the first, which appeared under his bourgeois name.

Although one will think of some dark horror story in the title, the album was inspired by the same astronomical book by Theodor Egon Ritter von Oppolzer, published in 1887. The work includes calculations of 8000 solar and lunar eclipses, including graphical overviews, that took place between 1207 BC and 2162 A.D., and is still a kind of standard work of astronomy. The CD comes in a high-format cardboard slip, adorning a graphic from the book, in which, in addition to the CD, there are three postcard-sized prints showing the front page and other artworks from Oppolzer's work, and on the back of which information about "Canon der Finsternisse", Oppolzer and the album. Very nice!

According to the theme, the music glides very cosmically and floating through the ear canals, ambient-like, but also retro-electronic, without falling into typical Berlin sound worlds. Rather free and formless, the tone mixes here weighed delicately to kernider reverberating, setting the play of celestial mechanics, the endless expanse of space and the emptiness of the cosmos in tone. In addition to various electronic sound sources, a piano, or a very good imitation of such a sound, is also decisive. In addition, there are again and again (especially in the three Canon numbers) subtly reverberating choral voices. I suspect the latter are stock sounds, or were created very authentically digitally. Nevertheless, together with the electronics, they create a very dense, hypnotic-mysterious atmosphere.
All sorts of other processed sound, lonely piano lines (which can even be heard soloistically in the short "Streulicht", alienated vocal inserts, even different drum patterns (which in turn sound extremely real), appear in the music, embedded in voluminous halls, sounds, waves, chirps, slings and plings, and produce a hypnotic, if very ethereal, floating there, all in all surprisingly varied head film. One could almost pack this music into modern classical music (post-classical?), and in fact someone like Joep Franssens created quite similar music with "Dwaallicht", albeit with additional use of a string orchestra.

"Canon der Finsternisse" offers a timeless, rather calm and shapeless forward, densely woven, subtly and deep into the ear canals, progressive-electronic-intensive music that has its roots in the „kraut“-electronics of the 70s of the last century, it absorbed some minimal music à la Riley, but then developed into a completely independent, new set of sounds. Comparisons could be drawn to the more recent works of Atomine Elektrine (Peter Andersson), who sets the universe in tone in a similarly independent way, but can do without piano and choral voices.

If you appreciate contemporary electronics, you shouldn't be without this album. Impressive!

...from my own experience and observation, I can state that it's not easy for an electronic album to receive a 13 points review at the BS.
Usually not more than 11, in some cases 12, but hardly ever more (including reviews of classic TD albums and such...).

So - congratulations and: well deserved!

Happy new year!

As a roundup of 2019 here is another very kind review done by Juergen Meurer on the german "Betreutes-Proggen" website rating it 12 points out of 15.

The original text in german language can be found here:

https://www.betreutesproggen.de/2019/12/frank-makowski-canon-der-finsternisse/

And a translation for those not familiar with the german language:

"Truly not commonplace, what is available for discussion in this case. It starts with the presentation, which is anything but conventional. In a cardboard slipcase there are three postcard-like prints attached to the CD, which show what this album is all about, namely astronomy. The "Canon of the Eclipses" is a work of the Austrian astronomer Theordor Egon Ritter von Oppolzer, which calculated around 8000 solar and more than 5000 lunar eclipses for the period 1207 BC. BC and extrapolated to AD 2162. Nowadays it seems almost impossible how at the time only 10 mathematicians could get such precise results without the help of calculating machines, and the graphical overviews even came from one person. The work was presented to the public in 1885 and printed two years later, but unfortunately the author was no longer allowed to experience this since he died at the age of 45 at Christmas 1886. The work is freely accessible.

About the musician: Frank Makowski already looks back on more than 30 years of experience in the electronic music scene. It is all the more surprising that this is apparently the first album under his own name. The first albums were released in the early 90s under the name Tranquillity, followed by several releases with ['ramp], which started as a trio with the band Ringlage, Makowski and Parsick. Lambert Ringlage got out early and they continued as a duo for a while, later this became a solo project by Stephan Parsick.
After his exit, there was a release in 2007 under the name The Speed of Dark, after which there was obviously a long pause. But now the musician is back with a very interesting publication under his own name.

The fact that he has taken on the subject of astronomy is also reflected in the music at hand, because you sometimes feel like you are on a journey through the endless expanse of the universe. The absolute highlight for the reviewer is the almost 13-minute opener 'Flying Shadow - Canon 1', which has an almost magical effect and is able to captivate the listener with wonderful choral arrangements, piano dabs and a fascinating mixture of melodic electronics , Neo-classical and ambient. As the process progresses, the ambient portion is screwed up, sometimes it becomes even more experimental. The rather abstract figures also impress, and you also occasionally dive into contemplative phases, it becomes extremely calm and atmospherically dense.

The insert indicates that listening with good headphones is strongly recommended. That makes sense! There is also another, more unusual word in this context: "Designed, recorded and produced by Frank Makowski in 2018/19". This has become a truly impressive construction in which electronic music, (dark) ambient, soundtrack-like and meditative are wonderfully mixed. A great total work of art that the musician presents to us here!

Rating: 12/15 points"
