Just read that DJ and electronic musician Robert Miles passed away at 47. His hit Children has been an inspiration for many.

Sad Sad to read this. Not that I ever had been a fan. But 47...? That's much too young...

The yardstick of what type of electronic music is popular these days, especially in Germany.

One of the reasons why I found the 1990s so bleak musically but I'm sure he was a lovable guy and his friends and family will miss him -- farewell, and strength to the ones he has left behind. And 47 is no age to die at.

Was a fan oh his. Dreamland and 23 Am are gems. Sad and way too young to pass. Rip

Very sad news. I have played his two first albums a lot, especially around 96/97. He managed to get electronic music out to the masses. Sadly, his last three albums mostly went unnoticed.

The similaroty between his hit Children and Patrick O'Hearn's At First Light may be more than a coincidence though.

Maresias is one of my favorite tracks:

Sad news and much too young indeed

RIP Robert, still have fond memories to your music.

May very well have been a big inspiration for many. If so, that'll be your legacy.

Too young to die.

I bought his two first albums, I specialy like the second one ("Full Moon" is my favourite track). I read in Keyboard magazine he recorded "Children" with only a Korg M1 and an Akai S900.

I doubt Robert Miles ever listened to this O'Hearn track. The melody line of Children could be heard in thousands of other songs. It's just very generic. That's probably why it was such a huge success in the first place.

O'Hearn sued him for 10 million dollars, no less.

Didn't know that. Still a bit far fetched from O'Hearn in my opinion. But at least it's clear wehere your comment was coming from. Thanks for the reference.

I'd never have thought I would ever say that but Robert Miles' "Children" is a lot superior to that O'Hearn track mentioned... what a tacky-sounding crap. Old sampling technique hasn't aged well.

Other than that three-note motif at the beginning I can't hear anything in Miles' composition that might -- with a lot of good will -- be similar to O'Hearn's track.

Having been a bass player with Frank Zappa, the tendency of sueing people for anything seems to have rubbed off on O'Hearn.

Was he ever paid that sum, or did he settle for less?

@Alvaro: Other sources claim it was a Kurzweil K-2500 (or 2000) only.

I can remember that I read in an interview that Children was made on a Roland JD800 / Korg 01/w only.

Therefore I presume "the instruments used in the recording of Children" depended of the number of ads paid by each particular keyboard manufacturer in the magazine where the interview was published Smile Smile Smile

I don't know how it ended. I have a feeling O'Hearn didn't get anything.
