I used to have Lifeforms in the 90s and stupidly got rid of it. What ones are their best? Is Lifeforms one of them? Also consider them electronica not dance, no sub category for that.

I have Lifeforms and the Cascade EP, that's all.
A bit too experimental for my taste.

Well, incidentally "Lifeforms" was both my introduction to them back in the mid 90ies as well as to what I'd simply call "good dance music" - something I wasn't not aware of earlier (I only knew either great, old electronica, or terrible cheap tekkno until then...). That's what I called it back then, but ironically when I more recently gave this album a listen after a longer break (due to the fact that I too had lost my copie some time before) I wondered why I thought of it as "dance" in the first place. I'd rather call the bigger part of it "experimental ambient" today.
Oh, and didn't they use some samples by Fripp and Klaus Schulze...?
I still count this album as one of the early turning points in my first few years of making music, a big eye (or ear) opener.
Maybe because it had such an impact on me, it's still my favorite of their albums. They have made a few others that I do enjoy a lot, to - "Dead Cities" for example, and "Environments"...

I remember they ripped a lot of samples off "Snowflakes are Dancing" and "Pictures at an Exhibition" by Tomita.

Of their original 90's releases, Lifeforms is definitely considered a classic. I'd also recommend ISDN (both the limited edition black version and more common white version). Dead Cities is also very good, if a little over the top in places.
FSOL have had quite a resurgence in the last few years. Of their new stuff, I'd recommend volumes 2, 4 and 5 from their Environments series, and 1, 4, 5 and 7 from their From the Archives series.
You might also enjoy Tales of Ephidrina and Alice in Ultraland from their Amorphous Androgynous alias.

You might find the Environments series more your thing Jon. Try volumes 2 or 5.

Hi!
FSOL was a very important band for me too...bought
Lifeforms when it came out and it sounded very very good, combining the (then) modern sound with that of my older favourites from the 70's... Dead Cities also has some excellent stuff there. Btw they sampled "Aqua" too on liferforms and plenty from "Phaedra" on Tales of Ephidrina.
