Sat Jan 14, 2012 1:59 pm Dr. Stergios Tegos & Vangelis -Microneurosurgery Soundtr
Around Christmas last year fellow Vangelis collector Don Fenimore (uncledon) confirmed the existence of a medical book & 3 x 3.5 hours video tapes with ~ 11 hours of Vangelis music.
The mysterious project was listed some time ago on the EMI websites simply as Tegos Case 1-35, no other info, even Google finds nothing until the doctor's name is typed using Greek characters...
Don found a copy during holidays in Greece.
Preamble
Dr. Stergios Tegos video recorded 35 Microneurosurgery procedures between '91-'98 for a medical book.
The videos were totally silent with no medical instruments noises or any other sound effects, no surrounding environment, just close ups of the surgery areas.
So he asked Vangelis to compose some background music which he did, almost 12 hours worth.
The Box/book/tapes package was released in 1998 and sold through specialized Medical outlets & like on Silent Portraits, Vangelis is not credited on the cover keeping his contribution undetected.
The print is on high quality paper and two column format Greek/English.
Goodies
The Video tapes are in PAL format with very good Stereo audio, image quality is also excellent for a tape although not something for most of us to watch...
Each "Case" ranges from 10-28 minutes with it's own unique soundtrack, Dr. Tegos does explain in Greek something about what he does in 20-50 seconds bursts, the rest is clean music.
Since the tracks are so long it's quite feasible to extract a lot of meaningful audio by deleting the commentaries/crossfading or backfilling the gaps with cloned sections resulting in ~ 8 hours of music.
The music came as an unbelievable surprise, this is Vangelis like we never heard before, very long tracks, all slow matching the surgery video with occasional distant percussion, and, hours of it.
The sounds seem to come from all of his releases excluding the RCA years, from L'apocalypse des animaux right through Invisible Connections, Voices, The City, less the bombastic sounds.
All compositions are atmospheric ranging from Steve Roach cosmic to ambient, to slow classical to Invisible connections sparseness filled with sounds from The City, yet there is not a single minute sounding like anything he released on record.
At long last, I think this is Vangelis in his experimental (yet polished) form, maybe this is how he composes- long pieces and what we get to hear are polished extracts with melodies on top...
As usual with Vangelis, we find more about him from those around him, see the acknowledgement section.
I am about to finish digitizing the 2nd tape and only found diversity with no duplication.
Now, a suggestion to the likes of Esoteric:
Talk to Vangelis' management and get this music out as an 8-9CD box set and see what happens instead of over recycling countless old releases we already have or can buy for 10 bucks...

Fascinating!
Actually, it stirs my appetite to revisit my (humble and incomplete) Vangelis collection again - many of his music I haven't listened to for years, it seems.
So, I guess I'll have a little private Vangelis revival this weekend...
Thank You for the inspiration!
Good research work, btw.
I'd really love to hear that material one day, as many of it seems to be more atmospheric (which I usually prefer to Vangelis' more monumental/orchestral/hymnic work). _________________ M I C H A E L B R Ü C K N E R http://michaelbrueckner.bandcamp.com

Following my restirred interest in Vangelis' music, right this moment I explore "Invisible Connections" via grooveshark.com.
Quite cool and so far astoninglishly "un-vangelistic" - if this material indeed should be similar, I'm interested in it even more...
Sounds a bit like he were in "Beaubourg" mood then, just this time hitting the "whole orchestra" instead of only his Yamaha thingy (never can remember the correct name of it...). _________________ M I C H A E L B R Ü C K N E R http://michaelbrueckner.bandcamp.com

Yeah! Thank You, Stephen - very reassuring to know that there's a specialist ready to help out whenever I don't have my copy of "Synthesizer von Gestern" at hand...
...which, of course, only reports about the CS 60 anyway.

This is not directly related to this thread, just something about (and some words from) Vangelis I stumbled over at Facebook...from an Arabian (?) TV Station (?) - couldn't really find out what exactly it is, but it calls itself "Al Jazeera"...
Vangelis: A message of hope
The internationally celebrated Greek composer talks about the role of music in times of chaos, crisis and uncertainty.

Al Jazeera is a well respected and opinion balanced TV station (at least the English version), I watch it now and then when retransmitted on our satellite channels.
They interviewed Vangelis and will air it this weekend, I expect to maybe see it through their website more out of curiosity.
The Qatar concert was more a symbolic cultural event and the main theme "A message of hope" a carrier for political undertones.
This "message" intended for the VIP/dignitaries invited and ending up as a standard diplomatic facade forgotten as soon as the last official photo' was taken and live returned to normal.
The VIP's invited did not all turn up which was good for some people who took their chances going there and managed to get in, but still many empty seats remained...
Half way through the event people started walking out, the media reasoning that it was a "cold" night (although blankets were supplied).
The result was far off from what was expected, but then worlds' problems are too serious for messages of hopes to fix... _________________ Imagination is more important than knowledge

Here's how it's done with YouTube:
1.) Klick the "share" button below the video
2.) Several new buttons should appear; klick on "embed" then...
3.) a window with code should appear; copy that code and paste it into Your post (it has a few options which You can check/uncheck - "using old code" is important for embedding in this here trusty old forum...)
It then should work, like this:
The full Vangelis interview, btw. has already been removed, I saw yesterday evening... _________________ M I C H A E L B R Ü C K N E R http://michaelbrueckner.bandcamp.com

Thanks a lot Michael, will give that a shot, it's simpler than what I kept doing, basically pasting the script within the various players brackets... _________________ Imagination is more important than knowledge
