Well, I was 18 when OMD first hit the scene in 1980 and over the next few years I was lucky enough to see them in concert a few times - I bought everything by them. (My other fave band at the same time was Ultravox).
I'm going to see them again in May at the Hammersmith Apollo on their 'Architecture and Morality' revival tour, original line-up and all the golden oldies will be played - to all of us golden oldies in the audience. I'm really looking forward to it, should be interesting to see the Apollo rocking with a load of middle-aged men who wish they were 18 again!

I like the early OMD stuff a lot. Architecture and Morality is one of my favourite albums.

I agree, Architecture and Morality is their best album IMO. I found the others too poppish or too, erm, weird. This one keeps a perfect balance, though.

yes Stephen it was, thought i was the only person to remember that! came free as a 7 inch with organisation, though i had to pick mine up years later 2nd hand.
i am in to minds as to go and see them live i was very excited when i first heard about it but i dont want to spoil the memory as they where a big part of my growing up well the first 4 albums. i love dazzleships i think it was the first creative use of sampling in the mainstream along with art of noise, i just dont think people where ready for it.

Agreed on that. Depeche Mode also did some interesting things on Construction Time Again. For me, the real ground-breaking sampler-based album from that time was Holger Hiller's Ein Bundel Faulnis in der Grube (though not quite so mainstream).

I'm not really a fan, ENOLA GAY I find to be repulsive, but Stephen Hague did come out of OMD, so it can't all be bad. They are kind of like Bronski Beat in that there are a few really amazng tracks there, but you'd never buy an album.

You must remember Bronski Beat had that awful singer Jimmy Sommerville . My wife is a big fan and his wailing drives me crazy.

You must remember Bronski Beat had that awful singer Jimmy Sommerville . My wife is a big fan and his wailing drives me crazy.
Many of us remember him, especially now when his "Smalltown Boy" gets a remix treating and hits the charts.

Early OMD is NOTHING like Bronski Beat - I'm not suprised that you would never buy one of their albums, but I think Architecture and Morality & Dazzle Ships are both excellent albums from beginning to end (and are great examples of innovative production from that time to boot).

for me it has always been the album tracks that i really got into. stuff like statues, stanlow all the slow and moody ones. the pop was good but for me their depth was in the album tracks and b sides. i am surprised that they dont have more people into them from the em corner. they always talk about being influenced by 70's german music and they use mellotrons. i always found them to be a refreshing tangent.

I'm totally with you on this! The tracks you mentioned are wonderful, as well as things like Sealand and yes, those great B sides.
