Thanks VCO1,
I kind of agree with it, iPods are great for mobility but ruined the art of listening.
Suddenly music is listened to everywhere, most of the time, one would think that would be positive.
Instead it desensitizes ears and there is no more looking forward to that "detail hunting listening session".
DVD-A and in particular SACD were meant to be future formats free of all restrictions the CD has.
Then out of the net comes LoFi mp3 @128kbps with rap tunes or drum n' bass setting a new standard.

There are far more home entertainment opportunities now. Home cinema, computers, mobile devices, video games, internet, forums, numerous TV and radio channels. To name but a few. Sitting between a pair of stereo speakers in the "sweet spot" is no longer the only pinnacle of home entertainment.
Hence why "music on the move" is so popular. And vs a cassette walkman, I'd take some well encoded MP3s on an iPod any day.
These things do not need to be mutually exclusive. You can have mobile quality, and full HiFi quality.
Why I'm supportive of media-less music is because it opens up a music collection in a way purely media-based can never do.

I like the whole capability of the ipod, I can walk round with 2 or 3 thousand albums in my pocket. My ipod listening outnumbers my hifi listening by probably 20 to 1. It is also so personal aswell, you haven't one of the family shouting " turn that shite off ". With a decent pair of small headphones, I think the quality is fine(my ears are probably
buggered anyway, I do detect a continuous ringing in them). Their is also an almost perverse satisfaction being served in tesco or waiting in a bank queue listening to Slayer or eary Sabbath or Motorhead at full tilt. At the other end of the spectrum its nice to get out in the country and chill with something a tad less noisy.

As previously said, both sides of the story (iPod with headphones and hi-fi stereo in your living room) can live at the same time. Undoubtely I prefer a big stereo at home, with the subwoofer provoking an earthquake while playing Redshift, or with the tweeters screaming KS' "Mirage" crystalline sequences...
... but with my mp3 player I can listen to my fav music while going to the supermarket for shopping or, as oddentity has brilliantly said, waiting in a bank queue or at hotel lounge: you don't have to listen to that horrible light orchestra/folk/pop/ambient music anymore. For me, it's was a kind of modern torture. I can't stand those horrible light orchestra versions of pop classics that are played inside airplanes, trains or elevators.
Long life to portable audio players!
(but without killing big stereos )

Having music around everywhere is no bad thing as such because sometimes this is the only way to survive (guess why I pay special attention to both my car stereo and the music I have on board while driving). The bad thing is the instant availability of music and the lack of discriminating listeners who could tell an MFSL album from a 128kps mp3...
Most people do not listen to music because they enjoy listening to it, it´s just a means to kill boredom or silence with.

and that's why the same folks have stopped buying albums because they think downloading is for free.
I hear a lot of people talking of how many Gb of MP3's and movies they have, not telling which one they really enjoy and which one not. For the latter they have the excuse, that space won't cost them too much.
I think this boredom is the real enemy of music and film.

Boredom is the enemy of everything.
Let´s have a war. A good way to fight boredom.

Well, computer games started with monochrome 640x480 and what we have now? Sound quality for mobile devices is just a question of time and technologies, I guess.

I have never understand the need for listening to the very expensive HIFI-sets.
people think music wil be beter, well bad music will stay bad.
buying expensieve direct cut vinyl albums oooooo wonderfull pfffffff
listening to Led Zeppelin it is only good to play it LOUD
so listening to good mp3 is still fun, you really do not need super hifi stuff.

O.K. I see your point. But If an MP3 is basicly enough why do a lot of musicians still swear by analogue gear since they say it sounds so much better than those virtual synths...?

I never said analogue sounds better than virtual analogue or software synths, I cannot tell the difference. only the look is better.
I think it is only the old "MY THINGIE IS BIGGER THAN YOURS" problem

As with all things, it's horses for courses. I'm totally with Bert here - MP3 sounds just fine to me, I can't really hear the difference and I'm not anal enough to take it any further than that. As for analog and virtual, I use virtual synths because they are cheaper, more flexibile, more reliable, don't take up as much room and certainly use significantly less electricity (I could mention also about VST being greener, but again, simply no that anal).
The whole discussion revolves around one word, something which I think a lot of people shy away from......
Progress.

Deterioration is no progress.
The fact that people can´t smell, taste, hear, feel deterioration doesn´t make it a good or desirable thing. If people are happy with junk food, junk music, junk outlook on life, well, I guess it´s their prerogative but I refuse to support this notion.
Of course it´s progress if you can convert human remains into tasty food but the question arises whether or not this is desirable.
