Wed Jul 29, 2009 9:45 pm Audio System / Soundcard: Internal? External? Differences? |
  |
Hi,
I'm planing to replace my current computer (again), where one important point, of course, is the audio part.
Up to now, an (old) TerraTec AudioSystem EWX 24/96 is running here, which is OK, but sometimes tends to crash my computer (blue screen).
What would be a nice audio solution for musicians currently? I am not sure about whether to use an internal or external solution, but think that internal suits my situation better. I don't know about the technical differences, though (if any).
My requirements are not that of a studio master. I have a small mixer going into and receiving out of the audio system and my Korg Workstation that goes in and out for Midi.
Hints and suggestions are most welcome
Cheers,
Stefan

I would recommend:
- MOTU 828 II FW (I had in 2007 and 2008 - recorded "Soledad, Universal Quiet and Sequential Tourism" with it) or the newer MOTU 828 III FW
- Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 (I have this one now, it's excellent)
Both have multiple in- and outputs. Great sound quality.

Don't buy the Behringer crap it sounds shitty.
Get Presonus USBBox or an M-Audio Fastrack pro if it has to be cheap.
Or get a second hand RME 9632 if you want very good drivers and sound quality

Well, no, it does not have to be cheap but reasonable. I am not going to open a studio

Sounds interesting.
So you prefer an internal solution over external. Are there any technical reasons?

RME is good anyway with drivers. I personally don't want anything else anymore.

Ok, so I didn't get that ebay offer (why did it have to end at daylight working time anyway?), but as latency and reliability is still an issue between internal/external solutions, the RME is on my wanted list. The price for new cards isn't that bad actually. Well ...
