Hi all,

I just learned that Boudisque, one of the biggest music stores in Amsterdam, is going to shut its doors for good next month. What a bloody shame. It seems as if the entire download "culture" is asking its toll here, too.

That's pretty bad news. The end of an era, really. I have some fond memories of this shop. They used to have one of the largest collections of EM of all record shops (and I'm talking before the internet here). Platenmanneke (several places), Haddock (Rotterdam), Simpele Fons (Dordrecht), the shops in Breda and Eindhoven (can't remember their names). They're all gone.

Until very recently Boudisque still had a good collection of EM and ambient (thanks to Bob I guess).

Ok, there's much more choice now with the internet retailers and independent artists selling directly, but it doesn't really come close to the feeling of going through the bins and finding this one special record.

Anyway, the times, they are a changin' (and I'm getting old I guess).

Oh, and for the record (no pun intended), it's only the Amsterdam branch of Boudisque that will close down (as of March 29th 2008). They will continue in Utrecht and Nijmegen and on the net.

That's a shame, I've always enjoyed having a good look through Boudisque on my visits to Amsterdam.

A real shame - I was quite suprised it was still there though when I was in Amsterdam last year TBH.

I remember spending a lot of time in the shop (and purchasing quite a bit of music) when I was over there quite a bit around 1994-1996. They had a fantastic selection of music back then.

There is nothing that this grumpy old man can do about it, but I'm sad about these developments. Boudisque was a sure stop for me as well whenever I went to Amsterdam. The same goes for Tommy (I work in Tilburg for crying out loud).

If Bullit has to close down too there is nothing left for me to do but give up on brick-and-mortar musicstores. Which is a real shame... Online shopping is simply boring. Login, buy, logout. That's it. No real browsing, no interaction with other people (at least no personal interaction). Nah, call me old-fashioned, but I still prefer a physical shop.

Very well said, Max!

Online store do not *smell* or *feel* like a real record shop.

And downloads do not smell like vinyl LPs just pulled from the sleeve...

And for those of you who understand Dutch, this is an online video of the final day of Boudisque.

And to link it to EM: the man playing the last song (and DJ'ing throughout the video) is Bob Rusche, KinkFM DJ and EM fan (and as such responsible for a lot of the EM in Boudisque's collection).

I visited this shop last October, it was a good shop. Sorry to hear it is closing now, it seemed liked a genuine media shop IIRC, not like those streamlined glossy Free Record Shop chain stores.
