Bernhard Wöstheinrich - Studio Session 20210518
Materiaal Series, Part XLVI
https://bernhardwoestheinrich.bandcamp.com/album/studio-session-20210518
A performance set of improvised electronic music, recorded at May 18, 2021, in Berlin, Germany.
Composed, programmed, and recorded in real-time by a crazy mind and his laptop. No prepared sequences, patterns, or melodies used.
The experimenting of the Materiaal Series is continuing. The artwork by Christine Kriegerowski is based on medieval drawings of animals making music, as with the two previous releases.
Probably the artwork is meant to illustrate that like these animals this music was made in a similar immediate and instinctive manner.
Live-Performance and -Arrangement by Bernhard Wöstheinrich
Mastering: Markus Reuter
Artwork by Christine Kriegerowski (duckwoman.de)

Composed, programmed, and recorded in real-time by a crazy mind and his laptop. No prepared sequences, patterns, or melodies used.

»The cancer/zodiacal crab is also Berhard's sign, and the hermit crab is called Pagurus Bernardus. This was meant to be. And didn't last year turn us all into hermit crabs? And I have to think of Franz Kafka's Mr. Samsa, who turned into an insect overnight just like that more than a hundred years ago.«

TaboTago SESSIONS 007
A studio session recorded on March 12, 2021, Berlin, Germany.
The session was recorded in one go, with no overdubs and pre-arrangements.
The title of this release is inspired by the Sculpture "Heads, Shifting" at the Humboldt University, Berlin, Germany, by Josefine Günschel and Margund Smolka.
The sculpture consists of individual discs that can rotate independently on a horizontal level. The sculpture is thus in constant change. Slowly, the heads dissolve in their form, become sculptural formations, and finally reassemble into the figure. Through the almost infinite possibilities of combination, the sculptures always take on a new appearance. Very similarly TaboTago's music is in constant change, yet always remains TaboTago in a very recognizable way.

Materiaal Series, Part 050
A performance set of improvised electronic music, recorded at July 30, 2021, in Berlin, Germany.
Composed, programmed, and recorded in real-time by a crazy mind and his laptop. No prepared sequences, patterns, or melodies used.
We are celebrating the 50th release of Bernhard Wöstheinrich‘s Materiaal Series! The first seven releases of the Materiaal Series were from Bernhard’s 2015 concert tour of the USA, beginning with "Live at Stockton University 2015" performed live on Mark Dickson's radio show, Digital Dreams (WLFR-FM).
For the last six years, Bernhard has regularly been releasing various recordings of live performances, collaborative sessions and sonic experiments, as well as older music that has not yet been released as part of his Materiaal Series. The Materiaal Series is meant to be unplanned, improvised, and raw; nonetheless, the caliber of the recordings is on par with those of typical studio releases as each release is carefully edited and mastered.
This current 50th release is a set of impromptu performed electronic music, recorded in one pass at July 30, 2021, in Berlin, Germany. It embraces a completely new live composition technique: a cutting-edge mix of generative systems and improvisation Bernhard has developed for his musical space travels.
Artist Christine Kriegerowski provides the visuals for the Materiaal Series, freely channeling the music while creating via colored pencils, pens, watercolors, or pictures identifying with the creation of the music, a place, or an anecdote inspired by her own listening experience. Bernhard has started creating animations from her improvised drawings; this time she has assembled many godmothers and godfathers – of her drawings and of Bernhard's music – in a group picture over the image of a golden wedding anniversary in the 1950s.
To celebrate this 50th release of my Materiaal Series you can now sign up for a subscription to my solo Bandcamp catalogue. Please support this musical and social experiment with only 35 EUR per year.

Recording of a studio session at Andreas von Garnier's Synthasis Studio in Wilhelmshagen, Berlin, September 17, 2021.
The Wilhelmshagen sessions, taking place on a non-regular basis at Andreas's studio, are usually a good opportunity to experiment, play around, try out various new settings and combinations and eventually go completely go bonkers.
This edition is dedicated to Andreas' life partner Minji, who is always a friendly host and interested listener for us.

Sessions 008

A studio session recorded on October 14, 2021, Berlin, Germany.
The session was recorded in one go, with no overdubs and pre-arrangements.
The title of this Session release is inspired by the cloister vault at the Magdeburg Cathedral.
The Magdeburger Dom survived the trials and tribulations of the centuries. The cathedral has a cloister that connects to the south side of the building like a kind of corridor or gallery.
Walking attentively through this ambulatory, one can feel the reverberations of the many events that have unfolded around this spiritual and unique place, which is yet seems to be such a peaceful place right in the midst of a busy city.

A set of impromptu performed electronic music, recorded on August 12, 2021 in Berlin, Germany.
It's August 2021, and the live public music scene is still in a state of total gridlock. But for a musician it also doesn't seem to be an appropriate reaction to stop making music altogether. Hoping for better times, I invited Volker to my studio for a recording session.

On February 12, 2022, Alexander Paul Dowerk, a Berlin-based music producer, composer and touch guitarist, was invited to a Materiaal recording session at the Secret Vault Studio in Kreuzberg, Berlin. The recordings resulted in a complex and powerful interplay between Bernhard and Alexander, rich in variety. Alexander brought a strong sense of detail and groove with complex rhythmical structures to Bernhard's impromtu electronica madness.

With this release we are referring to "Internationales Congress Centrum Berlin" (abbreviated ICC Berlin), one of the largest conference centres in the world. It is 320 metres long, 80 metres wide and 40 metres high. It opened in 1979 as sort of a counterpart to another iconic futuristic building, the Palace of the Republic, which has opened only three years before. The ICC Berlin is a landmark of German post-war architecture, in which the spirit of an optimistic modernism is very present.
But if you look at the building up close now, the corrosion is already pretty obvious. In addition to that whole building is contaminated by asbestos. It seems that it became such a symbol of the decay of the promises of a better future that we were once given.

On April 15, 2022, Bernhard and Wolfgang Seidel met for a recording session in Wolfgang's studio that is situated in a former printing press manufacturing plant in Berlin’s Wedding district.
Wolfgang's studio is not only equipped with a wide range of electronic musical instruments, but also various acoustic percussion instruments and all kinds of sound sources are ready miked and prepared for recordings at any time. And so, the recording session took place in a very focussed mood, and it then resulted into something that has quite a narrational and heteromorphic flow.
The recordings were mixed by Wolfgang. For the second piece he later overdubbed additional drums. Also, the length of the two tracks is intentionally set to suggest a vinyl release.
Christine Kriegerowski depicted the musicians as stylites or pillar-saints. Stylites are a type of Christian ascetic who lives on pillars, they believe that the mortification of their bodies would help ensure the salvation of their souls.
This image of the two musicians as pillar-saints is of course not without self-irony and alludes to how much musicians of this genre are on a lost cause.
