After the (tuner), cassette deck, and turntable, this time the cd-player went into permanent storage. I kind of said goodbye to physical media.

This doesn't mean I won't be buying cd's anymore. Some albums simply aren't available in lossless digital format. Or are too special to not have. But they will be ripped immediately.

These are beautiful times. All music instantly available. And a setup that has been significantly reduced (music streaming to a Raspberry Pi).

This wasn't an easy decision b.t.w. I'm a music collector at heart. And still love to hold a cd in my hands. But this is just so much more convenient. And saves so much space.

You have a point here.

That's why I want to be cremated after my final breath. Saves a lot of space: Up In Smoke.

I used to think it was Ashes to ashes, funk to funky.

But again, I might be wrong.

I will never do that.

Forever physical.

Forever is a long time. Wink And a lot of great music is already only available as download. But I see what you mean.

So 5 minutes ago I ordered 2 new cd's. So still buying those. Like I wrote, I'm a (music) collector at heart.

If there is stuff only available on download, I burn it to CDR so I have a physical product. Smile

(kinda late to this thread...)

I converted my whole CD collection to FLAC/lossless files starting in 2004 and keep them backed up to a main hard drive(s) and 2 sets of backup hard drives. One is in my home, the other is in a safe deposit box. I rotate and resync them every few months or so. I have some windows batch scripts that make this very easy.

I still have the old CDs, they're stored on spindles (the kind used for CDR/W discs). I get rid of the standard jewel boxes but if they are a digipak (or otherwise unusual packaging) I keep those as-is on a shelf. And all artwork (including the tray paper) are kept in Case Logic CD albums.

SACD discs and DVD-Audio discs are an exception, I have no idea how to extract those. SACD usually has a regular 2 channel layer that I can extract but not the multi channel, high rez stuff.

The best thing is having my entire collection immediately available with just a few mouse clicks. My desktop computer has a digital output that runs to my home theater receiver. So I can listen that way too.

Future plans are for a music server using a Raspberry Pi computer to build my own NAS & server so I can listen to my own collection anywhere using my iPhone.
