Phillip Wilkerson and the Earth Mantra netlabel have released a new ambient project entitled Still Point.
Still Point joins Phillip's Ambient Series in his growing catalogue of Creative Commons releases. The 8 tracks on this release are "pure" ambient tracks featuring gentle soundscapes, amorphous textures, and shimmering tone washes.

F.D.Project - HeavensGate

Frank Dorittke ist mit seinem Projekt F.D. Project mittlerweile schon Stammgast im Musikzirkus-Magazin, denn er versteht es immer wieder durch seine sehr melodische Elektronikmusik, die er mit seiner E-Gitarre würzt, zu überzeugen und zu fesseln. Nicht ganz ein Jahr ist seit "The Journey To Another Place" (CD + DVD) vergangen und schon veröffentlicht Frank sein neues Album, das den Titel "Heavensgate" trägt und bereits seine sechste CD darstellt. Und wie gewohnt präsentiert er auf dem Silberling eine Mischung aus elektronischen Synthies und E-Gitarre, die vor herrlichen Melodien wieder nur so strotzt.
Acht Stücke hat Frank auf der fast 70minütigen CD platziert, von denen sieben mit Laufzeiten zwischen 4:39 und 7:34 Minuten aufwarten. Das Kernstück der CD ist aber der 27minütige Longtrack "Mandarinentraum", der die CD eröffnet.
Schon am Titel von "Mandarinentraum" ist zu erkennen, dass dieses Stück dem großen Namen der "Berliner Schule" gewidmet ist. Gemeint ist natürlich Tangerine Dream. Dieser erste Track ist schon mal ein richtiger Hammer für Freunde gut gemachter Elektronik, denn er weist nicht nur eindeutig Zitate von Tangerine Dream auf, sondern hat auch Passagen, die u. a. an Ron Boots, Klaus Schulze oder durch den Einsatz der E-Gitarre an Mike Oldfield erinnern. Wunderschöne zarte Synthieharmonien, zu denen ein weiterer Synthie flirrt, starten in diesen Track, der sich immer weiter steigert und über die volle Distanz seinen Spannungsbogen halten kann. Melodielinien, Rhythmus, Sounds und Effekte sind perfekt aufeinander abgestimmt. Schon dieser Track lohnt den Kauf des Albums. Frank ist meines Erachtens damit schon ein Stück gelungen, das ihn zum Anwärter auf den besten Titel des Jahres macht.
Eine Konstante in Franks Schaffensphase ist u. a. das Stück "Galaxy", das er auf den ersten drei Alben in verschiedenen Variationen veröffentlichte. Auf dem neuen Album befindet sich davon ebenfalls eine Version, die den Titel "Galaxy 2008" trägt. Den Track hat Frank wieder etwas abgewandelt, ohne aber den Charakter des Stückes zu verändern.
"Spaceball" beginnt mit sehr schönen elektronischen Effekten, bei denen der Synthiesound zwischen den Boxen hin und her schwebt. Dann entwickelt sich wieder eine sehr schöne Melodie, die Sehnsüchte erzeugt. Neben den Synthies spielt Frank eine sehr schön angelegte E-Gitarre. Und in der Mitte schimmert dann zur Überraschung noch ein Rhythmus durch, der doch sehr an Alan Parsons "The Raven" erinnert. Das passt aber ganz hervorragend in diesen Track.
Ebenfalls sehr spacig beginnt "Blue Planet". Durch die verwendeten Sounds hat man zu Beginn das Gefühl, als würde man auf die Erde zufliegen. Dann kommen Sequenzen, Sounds und Melodien, die meine Erinnerungen an John Dysons Musik wieder wach werden lassen. "November Day" vermittelt eine Prise Melancholie, bei der ich mir eine E-Gitarre gewünscht hätte.
Auch im Titelstück hat Frank eine sehr schöne Melodie untergebracht, die sofort ins Ohr geht. Der sanfte Rhythmus treibt den Track angenehm voran. Und nach etwas mehr als zwei Minuten kommt dann auch wieder die E-Gitarre zum Einsatz, die mir bei Frank immer besonders gut gefällt, öffnet sie doch Türen zur Rockmusik. Aber Frank beschränkt sich hier auf eher ruhige Riffs. Es folgt das eher sphärisch und futuristisch anmutende "Spectral", bei dem ich mich sofort in einer Raumstation wieder finde. In der zweiten Hälfte weht, was den verwendeten Sound anbelangt, wieder ein zarter Hauch von Alan Parsons durch die Boxen. Mit "Heaven Must Be Proud", das schon zu Beginn E-Gitarre bietet, beschließt Frank seine neueste CD. Dieser letzte Track ist für F.D. Project eher ungewöhnlich, weil er sehr songorientiert ausgelegt ist, was vor allem am weiblichen Gesang von Brandon Michele liegt. Der balladeske, melancholische Song passt aber gut ins Gesamtbild.
Es ist schon erstaunlich, mit welcher Sicherheit und Leichtigkeit es Frank immer wieder gelingt, seine Stücke aufzubauen. Auch die gelegentlichen Zitate an große Künstler sind sehr dezent eingestreut und wirken weder aufgesetzt noch sich anbiedernd. Frank sorgt mit seiner Musik für eine Reise durch die traditionelle Elektronik, bei der man sich sofort zu Hause fühlt. Für mich gehört dieses Album jetzt schon zu den Highlights des Jahres 2008. "Heavensgate" öffnet die Pforte zu himmlischen Klängen und stellt daher eine absolute Kaufempfehlung dar.
Am 20.09.2008 werden Stücke von "Heavensgate" beim electronic-circus-Festival in Bielefeld live aufgeführt. Die ersten Hördurchgänge versprechen jetzt schon einen Auftritt, der für reichlich Gänsehaut sorgen wird. Wer Frank bisher noch nicht live gesehen hat, sollte dies an diesem Tag unbedingt nachholen.

I recorded the original version of this album several years ago using solely my computer's standard on-board soundcard with very little polyphony (probably 24 voices) and very basic GM sounds, as I wanted to prove to myself that ultimately it's the musician that counts and not the instruments he uses. The result wasn't bad.
However, now that years have passed and I have proven my point, I decided to give a better shape to those tracks, re-recording them completely, adding what I couldn't insert back then and modifying what had to be modified. While I was at it, I figured I'd add a few tracks I felt fitted the album's concept. I hope you will enjoy the result
